ODI core data migration for major LatAm telecom provider

This project was the first global ODI implementation for a client in the communications industry in South America. Ataway worked on the project together with another major software client on the implementation. ODI (Oracle Data Integrator) was the technology used to develop the project. It is an ETL, which brings data from different origins to different destinations transforming them if needed.

The communications client sought to update their core data and make a migration through ODI. Thus, it needed professional expertise offered by Ataway consultants via Oracle e-studio.

Company profiles

The communications client is the largest cable television operator in Latin America. The company’s cable TV service had around 4.3 million subscribers as of Q1 2011. It also operates a broadband internet service with 2.79 million subscribers as of Q3 2009, as well as a telephone over cable service with more than 2.5 million subscribers.

For more than three and a half decades, the software client has been the leader in database software. As it has further developed technologies and acquired best-in-class companies over the years, that leadership has expanded to the entire technology stack, from servers and storage, to database and middleware, through applications and into the cloud. With more than 380,000 customers—including 100 of the Fortune 100—and with deployments across a wide variety of industries in more than 145 countries around the globe, the client offers an optimized and fully integrated stack of business hardware and software systems.

It was a challenging project for two main reasons:

New product: It was the first ODI global implementation of such magnitude. The Ataway consultants had to learn it by themselves, creating their own self-learning process.

New development methodology: The requirements from the client were constantly changing. Also, the working team often changed in size and functions. The Ataway consultant had to adapt very fast in order to keep the same efficiency. The client implemented “Task Force” days, in which consultants from Brazil came to Argentina to clarify issues and to advance the work made in Argentina.

Main difficulties encountered: Again, the Ataway consultant faced two major difficulties that they had to overpass in order to fulfill the Project:

• The internal team did not have the requested expertise. Therefore, the Ataway consultant had to communicate more and share knowledge in order to be helpful and understood by the client.

• The requests made by the client were constantly changing. Thus, it was difficult to avoid repeating steps and to define the client's expectations with precision.


The Ataway consultant proved a capacity to adapt during this project. To overcome the difficulties encountered, the consultant had to train quickly to handle the new product. The consultant also had to deal with the shifting teams in order to keep working at the same level of efficiency.

It appears that assessing a prudent time of formation will guarantee a shorter development time.

Achievements & Outcome

The Ataway consultant managed to get involved and handle new data migration technologies with Oracle tools. In the process, the consultant helped Ataway expand its spectrum of consulting services. The Project implementation was completed on time and with the quality expected by the client. The very first ODI global implementation, which was led by an Ataway consultant, was a great success.
