This client is a leading British supermarket chain. With small grocery stores under its main brand name, big supermarkets in outside cities and 24-hour stores, the group is a market leader in the United Kingdom. Apart from being the national leader in the food sector, it is proud to sell everything to satisfy all its customers' needs and has adapted to rapid technological changes. Today, the client is a global player with well-established locations across Europe and Asia.

Project Overview

The project consisted of an implementation of PeopleSoft HCM 8.9 (Core HR & Payroll). The project started in June 2009 and had a go-live in December 2009. The client's existing Payroll System was a home-grown legacy system which required one instance for each store instead of single instance. Payroll calculation was also done by HR people in each store, leading to poor payroll data visibility and integrity. Also, decentralized payroll processing could not support the client's strategy of rapid new store openings in China.

The client had already established centralized financial functions in Shanghai. To continue centralization efforts, the payroll function was also centralized from store HR to the central Finance Centre. The client's China subsidiary intended to centralize the payroll process with the implementation of the PeopleSoft HCM. The existing payroll systems operating individually on each store were to be replaced.

The purpose of this project was to implement the PeopleSoft HCM Payroll software for the client. The project complexity was high, especially from a volume stand point-- it involved multiple service centers, 32 payroll specialist users located in 5 cities, 200 users in store HR with read only access and 25000+ employees. The Go-Live was framed in two phases: 1) Pilot sites Go-Live in October 2009 and 2) Other sites Go-Live in December 2009.

Challenges

  • One of the main challenges Ataway faced in this project was taking over implementation tasks from previous suppliers, resulting in huge efforts in investigation, rework and re-design. Ataway also faced a tight project schedule, diversified and complicated business processes for over 100 of the client's stores and offices, data cleansing and migration, varied repoting needs and complex interfaces for iExpense and eBanking.

Achievements & Outcome

Ataway met the tight project timeline, with an initial pilot-site Go-Live in four months and the overall project finishing in six months. Over 100 stores and offices and more than 25,000 employees were successfully migrated to the production environment and the client's six payroll centers, with more than 200 HR and payroll users successfully functioning on new PeopleSoft HCM environment.
