Why Automate with PeopleSoft Test Framework

Watch Ataway’s exclusive interview with Oracle Product Manager David Bain as he discusses the value of the PeopleSoft Test Framework.

With the introduction of PeopleSoft Selective Adoption, PeopleSoft customers are now able to decide what features and functionality to uptake and when to apply the changes. Oracle is no longer releasing major updates, but is rather offering the continuous delivery of new features and enhancements.

Just like PeopleSoft customers are now able to decide on their own upgrade strategy, customers must also decide on a maintenance as well as change management strategy. PeopleSoft customers must choose how they will approach these strategies within a continuous delivery model.

PeopleSoft Test Framework (PTF) offers users a free and automated testing solution as part of their PeopleSoft application investment.

PTF assists in the automation of regression tests to ensure that new changes and updates are not effecting the performance of the existing environment.

PTF is an automation tool that enables users to automate the functional testing of PeopleSoft applications. Automating functional testing compared to manual testing allows users to complete more tests with a greater level of accuracy and a faster execution time.

PTF is delivered with PeopleTools 8.51 and above and uses a “record and playback” approach. With PTF, users can create test scripts inside of their application database. PTF works by replicating the activities of a test user executing functional tests against the PeopleSoft browser-based application. Users can record test procedures and then execute after an application upgrade or patch to make sure that their environment workflow is functioning as expected.

Users can playback the recorded test after changes to the application have been made to see if the application matches that of the recording. Using the PTF Test Development Platform, users can also build their own tests.

The PTF Test Development Platform is made up of four different components:

•      PFT Explorer—allows users to organize test elements
•      PTF Recorder—records the test
•      PTF Editor—provides users with tools to modify the recordings
•      PTF Log Viewer—see playback results

While PTF isn’t the only testing tool that works with PeopleSoft applications, there are many benefits of utilizing PTF.

Top Benefits of the PTF:

•      Faster execution time
•      No licensing costs
•      Users can validate recorded actions against PS browser-based application
•      Faster re-testing (after bug fixing/applying PUM Update Images)
•      Tests can be moved between different PeopleSoft systems
•      Security is the same as PeopleSoft applications—role-based

Tests through the PTF are considered PeopleTools objects, manageable through PeopleSoft Lifecycle Management. This provides users with a seamless, integrated testing experience.

While the PTF has a number of great benefits, there are some limitations of the testing tool:

•      PTF can run only on PeopleSoft applications and validate PeopleSoft objects
•      PTF cannot determine how things will appear on the web browser, such as how an image will show up
•      PTF does not do load testing; it records and replicates one user’s experience
•      PTF cannot replicate all user actions (i.e. drag and drop)
•      PTF is not designed to be set up by functional or end users; typically requires the work of a developer

Unlike other testing solutions that you have to run in order to identify if tests are invalid due to the changes, PTF provides system users with a Test Maintenance Report. This report shows which tests are going to be invalid based on user-defined rules, making it easy to take action immediately and make adjustments.

PTF is great for PeopleSoft application users that are looking for an in-house solution to automate testing and speed up the time of uptake. Users can adopt changes more rapidly when applying features and functionality found within PUM Update Images. In the end, this benefits the end user who experiences all the benefits of the latest PeopleSoft technology within your system.
