5 Steps to Migrate Your Applications to the Cloud Stress Free
Frederic Portal, Ataway Director of Alliance and Strategy

Cloud solutions are promising a ‘revolution’ that will radically change the way system are used and managed with infinitely flexible capacity, available almost instantly, and at very cost-effective prices. This enables organizations to differentiate fast and pursue opportunities at margins that previously could not be explored. To insure a great digital transformation you need to plan it with the right management tools and practices in place. The planning will help you to do that digital transformation much faster, simpler, and more rewarding process than you might imagine. These steps can help you make a successful transition.

1. Standardize, Consolidate and automate your existing on-premises environment.

Your cloud transformation start now! Before you move another big, important application to the cloud, see which applications are already in use by your organization, in all locations. You will need to review your current system and see what is standard and what is customized. If you are doing an upgrade look at the new functionality available and reduce your customization. This work will lay down the foundation for your cloud migration. It will also help your team to understand that in the cloud there is no customization or very few. It will also help them to review processes and customization to understand what are the one you need today.

From there, classify your apps into categories based on business necessity—from very necessary to not at all. Once you can see which apps are in use, by who and why, you’ll have a better sense of how to manage bandwidth accordingly.

2. Leverage a private cloud.

Private clouds are great for increasing agility while maintaining the security and control of your environment. Consider moving a single use case, workload, your test or dev environment to your own private cloud. Then when you did it successfully you can look at moving your production environment. You can use Oracle Enterprise Manager's cloud management solutions to quickly set up your own platform-as-as-service environment.

3. Explore public cloud services.

Oracle offers numerous resources—including demos, FAQs, white papers, videos, forums, and more—to educate customers about their readiness for Oracle Cloud. As you decide what, when, and how to move to the cloud, you can explore the range of Oracle's cloud services at

Oracle Cloud offers best-in-class services across software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and even lets you put Oracle Cloud in your own data center. The Oracle Cloud helps organizations drive innovation and business transformation by increasing business agility, lowering costs, and reducing IT complexity.

4. Understand what using cloud means to you.

There are three varieties of cloud. The public cloud moves your infrastructure from your data center to the cloud vendor’s facility. Private cloud creates an on-demand, virtualized infrastructure on your own premises. With hybrid cloud, some of your processing occurs in your private cloud and some in the public cloud, perhaps to support periods of high demand.

The cloud is also closely associated with the “as a Service” model of delivery. There are three major “as a Service” varieties. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) delivers only the compute, storage, and networking capabilities on demand. Platform as a Service (PaaS) adds tools for developing applications in the cloud. Software as a Service (SaaS) offers applications on a subscription basis.

5. Migrate the application to the cloud.

Execute the application’s transition to the cloud. Allow enough time after the migration is complete to evaluate the impact on performance, cost, and end users. Once you’ve resolved any issues and your support team is comfortable supporting applications in the cloud, you’re ready to migrate the next application.
